Theseus were helped to get out of the labyrinth by a ball of thread presented to him by Ariadne. Herodotus describes an Egyptian labyrinth with 3,000 rooms. A rather simple labyrinth is depicted on coins from Knossos; more complex patterns in the form of labyrinths are found in the drawings of Roman pavements and on the clothes of the ancient Roman emperors. The same patterns adorned the walls and floors of many cathedrals in continental Europe during the Middle Ages.

Indeed, psychologists have been using labyrinths for decades to study the learned behavior of humans and animals.
